About the Office

Office of the Provost

The Provost is responsible, under the President, for the oversight of the University’s academic functions and units. The Office of the Provost assists the Provost with this responsibility. Four Provosts have led the Office since its establishment in 1970: Rev. James Burtchaell, C.S.C., 1970-1977, Dr. Timothy O’Meara, 1978-1996, Dr. Nathan Hatch, 1996-2005, and Dr. Thomas G. Burish.

The Provost, Thomas G. Burish, establishes the strategic priorities of the Office of the Provost, serves as the principal representative of the academy at Notre Dame to both internal and external constituencies, and leads strategic academic initiatives on behalf of the University. The Provost’s direct reports include the Deans, the Vice Presidents and Associate Provosts, and the Vice President for Research.

The Office of the Provost is divided into three major functional areas, with a Vice President and Associate Provost providing support in each area.

Provost’s Fellows

The Provost’s Fellow program is a way of inviting members of the faculty to participate on a part-time basis in the activities of the Provost’s Office and to bring a faculty member’s perspective to our discussions and deliberations. Provost’s Fellows participate in the regular meetings of the office and also meet with the Provost regularly. An essential component of the experience is working on select administrative matters and special projects on issues important to faculty.
