The Institute for International Education ranked the University of Notre Dame fourth among doctorate-granting universities for undergraduate participation in study abroad during the academic year 2014–15. This represents a significant increase from the University’s ranking of #10 last year in the annual Open Doors report.
Notre Dame International’s study abroad office manages over 50 semester study abroad programs in 26 countries around the world. The Open Doors report compares the number of students studying abroad to the number of degrees conferred in a given year in estimating study abroad participation. Using this measure, for Notre Dame in 2014–15, an estimated 64.2% of the graduating class participated in study abroad.
“More important than the numbers is what this data represent: that more than six in ten students are studying abroad at some point in their undergraduate career at Notre Dame,” said Dr. Michael Pippenger, vice president and associate provost for internationalization. “Study abroad experiences contribute to students becoming global citizens, enhancing their intellectual work and enriching our community when they return to campus.”
