Kevin Barry, most recently interim director of the University of Notre Dame’s Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning, has been appointed permanent director of the Center, effective July 1.

“We are very pleased that Kevin has accepted this role,” said Daniel J. Myers, vice president and associate provost for faculty affairs. “His strategic vision will guide the Kaneb Center in its existing activities and spark new directions as well. Kevin has already identified several new initiatives for the Center, and I look forward to watching it flourish under his direction.”

Barry is a fellow of Notre Dame’s Institute for Latino Studies and a member of the Notre Dame Migration Working Group. His work at the Kaneb Center focuses on helping faculty members and teaching assistants with the selection and implementation of pedagogical strategies to enhance teaching and learning. He also collaborates with departments on program assessment and curriculum revision. In addition, Barry serves on various University-wide committees including Academic Council and the University Council on Academic Technology.

Each spring, Barry teaches a project-based, multidisciplinary course called “La telenovela: género, significado cultural y producción estudiantil,” designed to enhance the media literacy of students while they develop language skills. He was the director, videographer and editor of a short documentary film, “Project Mexico Immersion: Confronting Transnational Migration,” which examines the relationship between Plymouth, Ind., and Santiago Capitiro, Mexico.

Barry earned Ed.S. and master of science degrees in science education and a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from the Florida Institute of Technology.

Founded in 1996, the Kaneb Center stimulates scholarly reflection and conversation about teaching and supports the adoption of practices that enhance learning. The Center offers a variety of resources that facilitate the exploration and implementation of learner-centered pedagogies. The Kaneb Center was established with a gift from John A. Kaneb, a Notre Dame trustee since 1980 and the chairman and chief executive officer of HP Hood and other family-controlled companies.
