The Provost's Office is a team of dedicated strategy and operations professionals who collaborate to advance Notre Dame's research and teaching missions and support the University’s goals as outlined in the Strategic Framework.

The Provost’s leadership team includes two key advisory bodies — the Provost’s Cabinet and the Deans’ Council.

    As provost, John T. McGreevy is Notre Dame’s chief academic officer and is responsible for the stewardship of this mission, serving as the principal representative of the academy to both internal and external constituencies and leading strategic academic initiatives on behalf of the University. Working with the associate provosts, the vice president for research, the deans, and other academic leaders, he seeks to cultivate a learning community that challenges and engages students, inspires leading research and scholarship, and appreciates all intellectual inquiry as a pursuit of truth.

    Maura Ryan is the vice president and associate provost for faculty affairs and the John Cardinal O’Hara, C.S.C., Associate Professor of Christian Ethics. She oversees the McGrath Institute for Church Life and the Institute for Social Concerns, new faculty orientation, the evaluation of teaching, reappointment and promotion for TPAC-RL faculty, faculty leaves, faculty appeals and grievances, and the resolution of faculty misconduct charges. She also provides leadership for a number of University services for faculty, including the Dual Career Assistance Program, the ND-LEAD faculty development program, external recognition for faculty research, the University's accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, and academic program reviews.

Her responsibilities include cultivating a strategic pipeline of outstanding faculty for national and international engagement and recognition; optimizing internal award and recognition opportunities in alignment with the University’s Strategic Framework; and designing meaningful commemorations of faculty achievements and contributions.

    Margaret Meserve is Edward H. Arnold Dean of the Hesburgh Libraries and vice president and associate provost. In her role as dean, Meserve leads a team of nearly 140 faculty and staff members at the flagship Hesburgh Library — which houses the Navari Family Center for Digital Scholarship, the Medieval Institute Library, the University Archives, and Rare Books and Special Collections — and three specialty libraries located across the Notre Dame campus. Her portfolio also includes the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, and the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, and the University of Notre Dame Press.
