Joe Lyphout is the Senior Director of Faculty Operations and Academic Systems in the Office of the Provost, providing strategic leadership for the policies, processes, and data systems that support faculty life at the University of Notre Dame. He serves as an expert on faculty appointment matters, advising senior academic leaders on complex policy, compliance, and operational questions that arise across the academy. Joe also serves as the Office of the Provost's point person for faculty data governance and directs multi-year academy-wide systems transformation initiatives, including the exploration of AI-powered innovations to advance operational efficiency.
Lyphout joined the University of Notre Dame in 2003 and has built his career here through progressively expanding roles spanning technology, marketing, and academic operations. He joined the Office of the Provost in 2012 and has spent more than a decade reshaping the academy's administrative infrastructure. His work includes building the University's faculty information system from the ground up — an appointment and document management platform that replaced legacy processes, integrates across institutional systems, and includes automated workflows — developing a faculty analytics ecosystem that gives senior leadership visibility into data on faculty lifecycle events and compensation across the academy. He also founded the Faculty Administrative Support Team, a campus-wide network of more than 120 academic affairs professionals dedicated to strengthening consistency and capability across all the academic units.
He holds an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, where he also earned a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems.
