Why is Notre Dame addressing diversity and inclusion?
Our commitment to diversity and inclusion arises from our aspirations about the community we want to be, the educational environment we hope to provide our students, and the moral character they will develop during their time with us. It goes to the heart of our mission, to who we are and to what we want to be.
How does Notre Dame define diversity and inclusion?
The University’s mission statement recognizes that “The intellectual interchange essential to a university requires, and is enriched by, the presence and voices of diverse scholars and students.” As an academic community, we endeavor to explore, discuss, and, when appropriate, celebrate differences as well as commonalities, thus enriching our grasp of truth and understanding. Notre Dame strives for a spirit of inclusion among the members of this community for distinct reasons articulated in our Catholic tradition. We prize the uniqueness of all persons as God’s creatures. We welcome all people—regardless of color, gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social or economic class, and nationality, for example—precisely because of Christ’s calling to treat others as we desire to be treated.
Does Notre Dame have a diversity council, similar to other organizations?
Yes. The President’s Oversight Committee on Diversity and Inclusion was created in 2013. Chaired by Fr. Jenkins, the role of this committee is to ensure that areas identified for improvement set achievable and measurable goals. The committee does not manage individual initiatives and projects but instead monitors progress across the entire institution.

Is Notre Dame’s diversity focus just on race and gender?
No. Animated by Catholic social teaching, the University affirms the transcendent dignity and worth of every human person, from conception to natural death, regardless of race, nationality or ethnic group, religious tradition, gender, socioeconomic class, immigration status, sexual orientation, or anything else. At Notre Dame we strive to reflect our Christian tradition by being a welcoming and inclusive community for all.
Where can I find University policies and guidelines regarding the respectful treatment of students, staff, and faculty?
Every member of the Notre Dame community is expected to treat others with mutual respect, hospitality, and warmth. This expectation is reflected in numerous University policies and guidelines. There are also several offices and resources dedicated to addressing questions or concerns regarding conduct that is not consistent with the University’s expectations.

How can I schedule a diversity and inclusion workshop for my office or academic department?
